Located just 25 kilometres from Inhambane City and 485 kilometres north of Maputo, is Flamingo Bay Water Lodge. It is a unique Mozambique getaway built partly on land and partly over the water of Inhambane Bay on the Barra Peninsula. The restful guest chalets are built on stilts over the water, bestowing upon guests the unique melody of the water lapping beneath the floor. ![]() ![]() The 20 water chalets of Flamingo Bay are unique along the East African coast – they are quite large and make for the perfect retreat! The chalets are simple but in a wonderfully stylish way, boasting lovely hardwood finishes and very welcome air-conditioning that will keep guests comfortable in the heat. When the tide withdraws, the water disappears from below the villas – guests can then take a stroll on the exposed sands and marvel at the thousands of tiny crabs scurrying about! The water chalets are connected to the main public areas of the lodge by somewhat lengthy wooden walkways – but not to worry; there are golf carts to transport guests who are not too fond of strolling. Once there, guests will find a gorgeous pool area where they can relax on a wooden lounger in the sun or head to the restaurant/bar area for a delicious meal or ice-cold beer or cocktail. The lodge is located in the estuary and not on the beach and therefore looks west towards the setting sun – guests are guaranteed some stunning and very romantic sunsets! If guests are simply set on relaxation and seclusion then there is little reason to lift a finger. However if the solitude becomes a bit overwhelming, they can head for the nearby sister lodge – Barra Lodge – where a lively bar and restaurant vibe can be enjoyed! (There are regular free transfers across from Flamingo Bay to Barra). Water sports are also a big feature, especially the firs-rate diving with some 14 dive spots to visit. There is also excellent deep-sea fishing, catamaran trips, dhow cruises, boogie boarding in the waves of the bay, horse-riding along the beach and even quad biking through the coconut plantations! ![]() ![]() After a busy day, guests can make their way to the lounge area or bar to enjoy a pre-dinner drink and a chat with fellow guests where they can compare notes about the day’s happenings. The food at the lodge draws near unanimous rave reviews from guests – dinners are usually a choice of starters and main courses, but make sure to spoil yourself at least once with the special seafood platter (the freshest fish, Mozambique’s famous prawns, calamari and lobster!) In fact with all the delicious fare on offer guests may just choose to skip the golf cart and instead walk back to their chalet every now and again. Due to the nature of the resort and its accommodations, children under the age of 12 are not permitted. A secure parking area is provided for guests vehicles. |
