OCEAN SAFARIS

If diving is not up your alley, and you don’t fancy getting wet, then join an ocean safari. The main focus of these trips is on spotting Whale sharks and giant Manta rays, and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins and whales in season. No wonder this area is called the Manta Coast!

You can also embark on some very leisurely catamaran safaris in the Inhambane lagoon. The luxury 33-foot catamaran offers comfort and style - a great way to explore these magnificent ecosystems. Sunset cruises with drinks and snacks are one of the highlights of your holiday at Flamingo Bay.

CHARTER BOAT FISHING

Some of the most spectacular sport fishing in the world is offered along the Mozambique coastline. This unspoilt stretch of Indian Ocean is largely unexplored, which makes for an ideal fishing holiday.

The fishing in and around Flamingo and Barra Resorts is world class, with excellent opportunity to catch Sailfish and other pelagic species. This makes the area a favorite destination for fishing competitions. Our resident skippers are very well trained, knowledgeable and experienced. The ski boats boast the latest equipment and tackle, leaving little chance for not catching 'the big one'.

At all times, tag and release fishing is encouraged, following conservation policies.

DHOW TRIPS

These traditional sailing boats are still built according to designs dating back a thousand years or more, and they continue to ply the coast as trade and fishing vessels with their white sails. Almost every Mozambique sunset or view of the horizon features the familiar triangular sail and handcrafted vessel.

As a visitor to Mozambique, this is one mode of transport you simply have to take – even if it’s for a brief sunset cruise or a sail across the bay.

MANGROVES

A magnificent saltwater mangrove with crystal clear waters surrounds Flamingo Bay Water Lodge and can be explored by boat or on foot. This unique ecosystem consists of a fascinating chain of saline-adapted plants and an array of interesting crustaceans. Flocks of flamingos, local fish traps and beautiful sunsets over the estuary provide photographers with dream material. It’s worth taking the catamaran for a trip around the Inhambane Lagoon to explore further.

SIGHTSEEING

A day trip to nearby Inhambane from Flamingo Bay is a great excursion. This attractive city is steeped in history and surrounded by coconut palms. It is one of several ancient trading posts that the Muslim and Persian traders called home for hundreds of years. The Portuguese followed later and established an important slave center here. The architecture in the town serves as a memento of this fascinating past, including the Governor's House, the museum, the mosque and Mercado. Other attractions in the city  include several cultural experiences, such as the central market where you will find fresh produce, fish, spices and cashew nuts.

A number of restaurants in and around Inhambane offer a great selection of local cuisine including the famous Mozambique peri - peri prawns.

HORSE RIDING

A guided horse ride on the beach is a once in a lifetime experience, and Flamingo Bay caters for both novice and experienced riders. A selection of mounts is available and guided horse trails are a fantastic way to see the surrounding area. Finish with a gallop along the beach – for  a thrill that you will remember forever!

QUAD BIKES

Quad biking through the coconut plantations opens up new landscapes to visitors. Following the established tracks and paths through these areas introduces visitors to the real Mozambique, rustic local villages which form the country's beating heart. Quad bike adventures are guided and managed by Barra staff. Quad bikes and vehicles are prohibited from the beaches in order to preserve the rich and unspoilt marine life.
