How to get to Flamingo Bay, Inhambane

Flamingo Bay Water Lodge is usually accessed by flights to Inhambane International airport – either from Johannesburg, Maputo or Vilanculos. Many clients from South Africa also choose to drive to Flamingo Bay from Maputo. Although it is a long day in the car, they can make it to the lodge in one day.

Inhambane is a town located in southern Mozambique. It is 485km north of Maputo, and the capital of the Inhambane Province. Flamingo Bay Water Lodge is situated about 35 minutes’ drive from the airport on the Barra Peninsula.

FLYING TO FLAMINGO BAY

Most international flights to Mozambique arrive from South Africa. There are several flights daily from Johannesburg to Maputo, operated by South African Airways. There are also several flights during the week from Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam, and Nairobi to Pemba in the North.

Visitors can fly directly from O.R.Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, Maputo or Vilanculos to Inhambane. A representative from Flamingo Bay Water Lodge will meet guests at the airport and assist in getting them on to the transfer vehicle to the lodge. Note: if guests fly into Maputo they will, most likely, need to overnight in Maputo as the flights may not connect.

DRIVING TO FLAMINGO BAY

Once in Maputo, you have the option of driving the 485 km stretch to Flamingo Bay. Drive with caution as speed limits are enforced. There are old sections of roads to travel with some potholes - but the main north-south highway is improving all the time. Avoid driving at night wherever possible.

The drive from Maputo to Inhambane and Flamingo Bay can take anything between 6 - 8 hours. Then, from the historical city of Inhambane, it is only a 30 minute drive to Flamingo Bay Water Lodge. The last stretch of your adventurous road trip is scenic, with roads winding through upbeat local villages and into thick groves of tropical coconut trees. It is better not to drive at night.
